The Unwritten Rites

Art in Context is a new extra curricular program of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. The program offers to students a chance to place their work within particular social contexts and to generate knowledge and experience in addressing specific social issues.

The Unwritten Rites was developed as a part of this program and presented during the exposition ‘PUBLIC RELATIONS’ at the Cobra Museum of Modern Art in Amstelveen, The Netherlands (29 May –  9 June, 2014).

The second part of this project is a space created with Cleo Florine, my colleague, inside the Museum, which we named ‘It is just our living situation’. That was our space to recharge while not working on our own piece.

‘They work within the frame, set the frame and are being framed.
— Hans Haacke
I work within the rules, set the rules and am being ruled.
We all erect walls. The one I will be interacting with, against, through, within, is heavy and can hardly be moved.
For ten days I will be questioning and testing myself in relation to the institutional rules, from the opening till the closing of the museum. How can we change the rules and are they needed? What is the relation between the ruled and the ruler – how do they mirror each other?’

Ivana Filip’s collection of works and products is inspired by her research, affect and close coexistence with nonhumans. Works in the shop as such represent the extension of her artistic practice. Hopefully these artworks and products can contribute to your richer experience and relationship with nonhumans or perhaps make your dear one jollier. Every month we shall donate 10% of our monthly income to a non-profit dedicated to the protection of nonhumans in Croatia.
